Designed by France’s self-styled design king, Philippe Starck, Mama Shelter offers the ultimate in comfort combined with self-consciously stylish accommodation. The rooms are kitted out with Mac TVs and all mod cons, but the mood lighting is so moody you’d do well to pack a torch! The best thing about it is the well-priced, informal restaurant/bar, which serves delicious food and gets very buzzy late in the evening, compensation for being away from the centre of Paris. Avoid the rooms at the front, which are noisy at night.

"Bedrooms are streetwise exercises in concrete, with iMacs and fairground masks covering bedside lights. It's the ground floor that's the real hit: with a shared table for pizza and the graffiti-ceilinged restaurant and Island bar."
