Hotel review

Following the success of the Josef, the Plobergers renewed their collaboration with Eva Jiřičná in 2004-5 to transform their other Prague hotel, the Maximilian. Unlike the Josef, a brand-new structure designed from the ground up, the Maximilian is a handsome 1920s building that Jiřičná overhauled with a nod to that period when Art Deco was being displaced by Modernism. Hence, the spectacular backlit yellow onyx wall behind lacquer and walnut reception desks, restful bedrooms with dark wood details and blue or red throws, and graphic art of the era, much of it on loan from the Museum of Decorative Arts. The friendly, efficient staff; peaceful yet central location; superb spa; spotless bedrooms; and relaxing library and drawing room with fireplace and honesty bar all make this a special place to stay.
