“Striking, castle-like stately-home set in sweeping parkland and offering plenty of on-site activities from fishing and golf to a cookery school and sleek spa. Vast rooms, beautiful views and a choice of two restaurants.”

Hotel review

With its battlements, towers and turrets, plus 250 acres of parkland, Swinton entices with its promise of English stately-home living. And you won't be disappointed. Still privately owned (and sitting at the heart of the family’s 20,000-acre estate of moors, farms and villages) inside it’s all polished-wood floors, massive windows, vast corridors hung with gilt-framed pictures and assorted reception rooms. In particular, there’s a striking, semi-circular drawing room and an elaborate dining room with gilded coffered ceiling. Bedrooms are satisfyingly large with sumptuous views of parkland, gardens or distant moors. Traditional in style, they’re furnished with a mix of antiques and solid country pieces and, while not grandly luxurious, they’re certainly comfortable with welcoming miniatures of sloe gin, local artwork and super-size bathrooms. By contrast, the spa - which combines indoor pools and thermal experiences with an outdoor pool, sauna and heated loungers - and Terrace Restaurant (in a separate block) are very 21st-century with an airy and contemporary feel. Although there are the nearby Yorkshire Dales to explore, most guests rarely leave the grounds and its on-site attractions, ranging from fishing and golf to pony-trekking and a cookery school. And did we mention the woodland walks, bird of prey centre, walled garden, afternoon tea…
