Chauffered through the grounds in a 1939 Pontiac (taxis don’t come in) and garlanded on arrival, it is hard not to feel a bit special here. This is the former home of the Maharani Gayatri Devi, the great beauty, politician and style icon. The vast Palace sits in 47 acres close to the city. After rain lapwings picked their way through the inner garden, Chandni Chowk, and flute-music echoed through the verandahs. Converted to a hotel in 1957 the 79 rooms and suites are exquisitely decorated. There are three restaurants, a good pool and excellent Spa.
