Since opening in 2009, the Upper House has risen to become the Hong Kong traveller’s hotel of choice, tempering sleek, serene style with unbeatable service. Ascending the escalator ¬– through a wooden tunnel backlit with lights – one has the sense of being absorbed into a cocoon away from a city that unremittingly pulses with energy. Here, calm is king: in the elevators, for instance, the ‘close’ button has been deliberately excluded to prevent any frantic pushing that might disrupt it. But what really sets the Upper House apart in a city as crammed as Hong Kong is space, with its crisp, elegant rooms each at a minimum of 730 square feet with panoramic views of skyscrapers and mountains beyond.
