Hotel Review
Within a four-storey medieval tower that was once the home of local aristos, twelve individually-decorated bedrooms combine period touches (lots of exposed stone, wood beams, and creamy white plasterwork) with modern comforts including air conditioning and wifi. The uppermost floor has been turned into a glass-walled lounge with panoramic views of the Oñati valley and the rugged Basque mountains. This view is shared by the hotel's glass-walled terrace restaurant, where a variety of set menus and a la carte dishes celebrate local produce and Basque culinary traditions with a modern twist (the chef is French). The buffet breakfast features local produce too, with a spread that includes local ham, cheeses, fresh fruit and pastries. Oñati, within walking distance, is home to the Basque country's oldest university and a pleasant place to wander around for a morning. Overall, Torre de Zumeltzegi would be an ideal stop for a night or two while touring the region by car, or as a base for a longer stay. Bilbao and its ferry port and airport are less than 40 minutes away.
