About Aruba
Totally flat, with no rivers and very little rainfall, Aruba may sound far from the typically lush Caribbean islands of the global imagination. It is, however, one of the region’s best-loved destinations, with some of the top beaches in the Caribbean, complete with pristine white sands and bright azure waters. Accommodation options range from simple, self-catering spots to sumptuous luxury resorts, fit for an array of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay in Aruba are set along the leeward (western) coast, where the waters are calm and warm.
One of the three ABC islands — together with Curaçao and Bonaire — Aruba was originally inhabited by Arawak communities, before being controlled by the Spanish, and later by the Dutch. It remains an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with two official languages: Dutch and Papiamento. Explore Aruba’s fascinating cultural heritage with a guided walking tour of Oranjestad, which boasts historic architecture as well as great boutiques and eateries. The Fort Zoutman Historical Museum is well worth visiting. Head north for the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins and the Aloe Factory Museum & Store.
Just northwest of Oranjestad, Eagle Beach frequently appears of lists of the world’s best beaches, whilst nearby Palm Beach is also a gorgeous place for a stroll or some sunbathing. There are quiet coves and natural rock pools to discover, too, as well as beautiful diving and snorkelling sites not far from shore. The shipwrecks of the Jane Sea, the Pedernales and the Antilla are deservedly popular, whilst Finger Reef is home to bright corals and turtles and Mas Bango Reef is famed for its fish.
Venture east for rugged Arikok National Park, which covers one-fifth of the island. Home to Aruban parakeets, whiptail lizards, goats, donkeys and iguanas, this is a terrific area for hiking, rock climbing, swimming and outdoor adventuring.
The best places to stay in Aruba are especially popular in high season, between December and April. Book your trip well in advance to avoid disappointment!
