About Port Antonio

Northeastern Jamaica’s Port Antonio is a charming coastal town, perfect for travellers dreaming of a laid-back island escape with plenty of heritage architecture, lively markets, beautiful beaches and a verdant landscape of hills and waterfalls. Once Jamaica’s main banana port, this little corner of the Caribbean grew popular with international visitors — the legendary Errol Flynn included — in the 1940s, but it has retained its easygoing vibe. Accommodation options range from eco-focused hilltop hideaways to elegant beach hotels, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Whatever their setting, the best places to stay in Port Antonio are small, characterful and secluded — ideal for a taste of the real Jamaica.

Amble through Port Antonio itself to sample street food, pick up souvenirs from local markets, and admire slightly faded Georgian architecture. Some of the most striking historic homes are set on the Titchfield Peninsula, including the iconic DeMontevin Lodge. The ruins of 1729-built Fort George are also nearby. You’ll find the eerie Folly and Folly Point Lighthouse on the opposite side of the bay. Today’s glitzy crowd keep their boats at the Errol Flynn Marina, which is also a wonderful place for a wander. Head to Bikini Beach for a swim overlooking Navy Island, and visit heritage monuments whilst in the area.

Port Antonio acts as the gateway to verdant Portland parish, which boasts some enchanting landscapes. Frenchman’s Cove is a particular favourite, but the Blue Lagoon, Long Bay Beach and Boston Beach are also well worth discovering. Boat rides and swims at Somerset Falls are magical, as is a hike up to Reach Falls. Don’t forget there are also opportunities to go sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and swimming in sparkling ocean waters, or to hike and birdwatch further into the Blue Mountains.

The best places to stay in Port Antonio can fill up fast during the summer months — book your trip well in advance to avoid missing out!
