About Brantome

Perched on the banks of the Dronne River in the northern part of the Dordogne, Brantôme-en-Périgord — generally known simply as 'Brantôme' — is famed for its medieval architecture, converted watermill hotels and superb forested surroundings. Ranging from self-catering cottages to luxurious riverside mill conversions, the best places to stay in Brantôme are intimate and charming, perfect for family holidays or romantic couples’ escapes.

Wind your way along Brantôme’s narrow, winding streets to pop into independent galleries, relaxed cafés and boutiques showcasing the region’s intricate glassware. The imposing Benedictine Abbaye Saint-Pierre is the town’s best-known landmark, and the adjoining Gothic church is not to be missed. Carved into the rock face behind the abbey is Grottes de l'Abbaye de Brantôme, which pre-date much of the town. Constructed during the 8th Century, this cave network was once a place of refuge to a community of Benedictine monks. Leisurely boat rides, kayaking trips or sailing excursions are a brilliant way to admire the five beautiful stone bridges which have spanned the river for centuries.

Enjoy hiking, horse riding and golf in the area, as well as wonderful wine tastings. The Brantôme market is a weekly highlight, especially during truffle season. You’ll also find exceptional black truffle-infused dishes at the best places to stay in Brantôme.
