About Agrinio

The largest city in Aetolia-Acarnania, Agrinio has a long and fascinating history. Home to around 100,000 people, the city can trace its roots back as far as the Neolithic period, though it was officially founded in the 4th Century BC. A prosperous trading hub under the Romans, the city later became part of the Byzantine Empire, and was ruled by the Ottomans until the late 19th Century. The resistance movement was particularly strong here, and tales of the city's battle for independence are very interesting. Heritage enthusiasts will be curious to see traces of this rich history all around the city — including at our pick of the best places to stay in Agrinio.

Begin at the Archaeological Museum, where you’ll find an impressive collection of ancient artefacts, before venturing out to the Stratos Archaeological Site, a mere 15-minute drive beyond the city. Back in town, you can admire the 19th-century Church of Agios Dimitrios, or catch a dance recital or musical performance at the imposing Municipal Theater of Agrinio. The Municipal Park is a great gathering ground for groups of friends and families, with a playground, zoo and lush gardens for picnics.

There are fantastic hiking and cycling trails in the tranquil countryside surrounding the city. Travel during spring or autumn for sunshine and cooler climes if you’re planning outdoorsy adventures. Rejuvenating spa treatments at our selection of the best places to stay in Agrinio will be all the more well-deserved.
