The capital of the Cyclades group, Syros sits just south-east of Athens. Appealingly accessible by ferry from the mainland, it’s a wonderful destination for a seaside escape. Expect striking neoclassical buildings, superb Greek fare, and plenty of sun-drenched beaches for family days out. Many of the best places to stay on Syros are simple and intimate — and very affordable.
Most holidays to Syros begin in lovely Ermoupolis, the island’s largest town and most significant historic seaport. Stroll along cobbled lanes lined with shops and eateries, admiring elaborate heritage residences, with whitewashed mansions as well as pastel-painted neoclassical creations clustered near the seafront. Visit the old shipyards, marvel at the imposing Ermoupolis City Hall, or step into Saint Nicholas Church and the Cathedral of Saint George for a sense of the island’s rich cultural history.
Beyond Ermoupolis, you’ll find a rocky interior criss-crossed with ancient hiking trails. The panoramic views from Agios Stefanos Church and Saint Pakou on the Hill of Galissas are well worth the climb. Spend your days walking, wine tasting, mountain biking or making your way to craggy coves with beautiful beaches for swimming and sunbathing. The beaches of Galissas, Kini and Agathope are particular favourites, and can be busy in the summer months. Book well in advance for a room at one of the best places to stay in Syros during July and August!
