If shopping is on your to do list for your Berlin jaunt then Charlottenburg is for you. During the Cold War this was the glittering heart of Berlin, and it still has glamour and prestige, with beautiful villas and impressive monuments - and now great art and Berlin’s largest shopping strip, the Kurfürstendamm as well. From this introduction you might think the 5 best hotels in Charlottenburg might be closer to the top end of the pricing scale, but our Guru’s list of recommendations is very affordable.
As well as art galleries and boutique shopping, Charlottenburg has some very fine restaurants and bars, which are reassuringly filled with locals as well as visitors. As far as headline sights go the main attraction is Scholss Charlottenburg and the glorious park surrounding it, but the Berlin Zoo, the Museum Berggruen (known for its Picassos and Matisses), and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church are also in Charlottenburg. Furthermore this is where you can visit The Story of Berlin museum, a multimedia museum documenting this city’s history.
The Hotel Q is a super trendy deign hotel just off Kurfürstendamm. The rooms and suites have chic but minimalist decor, but all the mod. cons., and there’s a lively members only bar on the roof, plus a top of the range spa and a Thai restaurant.
The Sir Savigny Hotel is a smart yet graceful hotel with 44 monochrome bedrooms featuring modern art and a private balcony. There’s a trendy bar with lots of white leather and animal skin throws.
The Hotel Zoo is a quirky, but stylish, hotel on a well known shopping street. Its 144 rooms are uniquely designed and uber luxurious and it has a fine dining restaurant, a chic bar and a fitness centre. Plus it's been a popular hub with celebrities in the past, and evokes a classic elegance.
Art Nouveau, located around the corner from the bustling Savignyplatz Square, offers charming accommodation featuring plenty of vibrant colours. An unfussy and friendly option, there's an honesty bar in the communal salon and organic breakfasts are served each morning.
