12 Best Hotels in The Three Valleys
Les Trois Vallées ski region consists of eight official resorts: Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Bride les Bains, St Martin de Belleville, Les Menuires, Val Thorens and Orelle, and a host of smaller villages and hamlets that fall within its giant web, which actually spreads over four, not three valleys. All up we count around 600 km of interconnected piste, with around 180 lifts, plus masses of uncharted back country. And across that terrain we also note dozens of mountain restaurants, from Michelin-starred establishments to family-friendly bistros. And like the range of eateries, we think our Guru’s picks for the best hotels in the Three Valleys are spread widely enough for you to find a great place to stay in your price range, from top notch luxury in Courchevel 1850 to a family run property bang on the slopes of Meribel (and pretty much anything in between)!
For Views of the Slopes
- Altapura is a super contemporary, super cool, five star, ski-in ski-out hotel with fantastic views over Val Thorens and the mountains. In addition to huge windows, the collection of 72 rooms and suites feature all the mod cons, and chic decor that’s heavy on either pale stone, pale wood or pale fur. The spa is fantastic too, as is the bar and restaurant.
- The Chalet Hotel Kaya is in a prime spot for views, on a south-facing rise in Saint Martin de Belleville — you can see the slopes and the mountains from all 50 rooms and suites. As well as being great for views, this is a great chalet for active skiers, you’re moments from the slopes, and for après-skiers there’s a heated pool, a hammam and sauna, several friendly bars and a choice of two restaurants. The family suites are a good size, and they offer babysitting facilities too.
For Chalet Chic Luxury
- Le Strato is a small, five star hotel right on the piste of Courchevel 1850. These 25 generously proportioned rooms and suites are super chic, with a traditional chalet feel: think parquet floors, furs, fireplaces and original art — and they all have private balconies too. Of course there’s a luxurious spa also, and the restaurant is fantastic.
For Romance
- Converted from a rustic farmhouse in a tiny hamlet, La Bouitte is a ten room hotel with a three Michelin-starred restaurant, that still looks and feels rustic, but the kind of rustic where every need and comfort is met. If you’re here for the food you’re able to take cooking classes, in addition to enjoying the outdoor spa, sauna, garden and fantastic wine list.
- Set above high end boutiques on the Rue du Rocher in the heart of Courchevel, White 1921 is a small and chic hotel with smart, contemporary design and fantastic mountain views from private balconies. There are just 26 rooms and suites, plus a fitness centre, a spa and sauna, an excellent restaurant and a suave champagne bar.
For Families
- The Hôtel des 3 Vallées is in a great spot at the foot of Val Thoren’s ski slopes — you can see them from all 28 rooms and suites. We recommend the four large Family Suites for those travelling with kids. The decor offers traditional chalet cosiness, with lots of wood, and the odd antique. The buffet skiers’ breakfasts will really set you up for the day and they serve an excellent three course supper at the end of the day too. There's also a sauna, spa and hot tub, plus a cosy bar with a fireplace.
- The Hotel Carlina Courchevel is a classic chalet hotel just minutes from the slopes in Courchevel 1850. The interiors tick all the chalet boxes, with lots of wood and big windows overlooking the slopes, and there are some cute traditional details. Our favourite rooms have balconies, and there’s a good range of family-sized suites, which will hopefully fulfil the needs of most families. There’s an indoor pool, a games room, a spa and a rather grand dining room.
For Après Ski
- Fahrenheit 7 is right on the slopes of Val Thorens: the outdoor bar is almost directly under the ski lift, so the views are spectacular, and it’s super convenient. Inside are 109 rooms and suites decorated with cheerful, retro chic flair and a penchant for velvet in great colours. As well as the outdoor terrace and bar there are two restaurants inside, and another two bars, one specialising in great wine and one with live music and DJ sets. The spa and sauna are impressive — and they have a cool ice pillar!
For Ski-In Ski-Out Convenience
- Le Val Thorens is a classic alpine hotel in a great spot under the ski lift. The 80 rooms and suites are dressed in pale wood, with cowhide throws and fireplaces, and chic mid-century touches. The bar and restaurant are chic and lively and the spa is top of the range. In addition they offer ski hire, and it's right next to a ski school, so it couldn’t be easier.
For Traditional Chalet Charm
- Close to the piste, and the centre of Val Thorens resort, the Hotel Le Sherpa is a pointed roof chalet hotel full of traditional Savoyard charm. Its 56 rooms and suites are cosy and comfortable, with the wood, fur and stone details that really say ‘ski chalet’, and all the mod cons we need today too (including a hammam and a spa with a nice list of beauty treatments). In addition to the rooms the hotel has three lounges with log fires, and a restaurant with an open grill that specialises in fondu and raclette evenings. Very family friendly too.
- Méribel’s La Croix Jean Claude is an historic alpine lodge with 16 simply decorated, and homely feeling rooms. The restaurant feels homely and welcoming too, and prides itself on its locally sourced ingredients used in regional recipes, served with regional wines. There’s a charming little bar too, where they offer breakfast.
For Great Value
- The Hôtel Les Monts Charvin is a chic and cosy little chalet B&B in the heart of Courchevel 1850. With just 19 rooms and suites — all featuring plenty of wood, traditional Savoyard fabrics and big bathrooms — this is one of our smallest Three Valleys picks, but we like it for its history (it was built by the current owner’s grandfather, who was one of the area’s first ski instructors) and its great price tag. Breakfast is served in a pretty Breakfast Room with a fireplace, and there’s one in the bar too, plus a jukebox in reception.
