Dignified and beautiful Mediterranean beauty, Palma de Mallorca is the only real city in the Balearics, and thus home to the many of the best boutiques, the best restaurants and of course the best hotels. The incredible Gothic cathedral and warren of streets of Palma’s old town welcome everyone in. There’s enough fresh seafood delivered to the Mercat d'Olivar and the Mercat Santa Catalina each day to feed everyone, but the dazzling rows of yachts in the marina speak of Palma’s ‘high end’. But the best luxury hotels in Palma de Mallorca don’t all come with the price tag you might expect. The Hotel Convent de la Missió is a sublimely converted 17th Century convent in the heart of the old town. There are now 27 beautiful, white-on-white minimalist rooms and a Michelin starred restaurant - one of the hottest on the island.
In the same area, right by the cathedral, you’ll also find the Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, a quirky, 12 room hotel full of character. Expect antiques, and even stained glass, plus a spa which sits within original Roman baths. The sun terrace has amazing views.
Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden is an Idyllic luxury hotel and spa in the the Old Quarter, with a lovely garden and outdoor pool. The nostalgic interiors featuring vintage furniture, faded colours and classic tiling give it a whimsical edge, and the equally elegant rooms have a plush boudoir style. The high-end cuisine and spa seals the deal.
Can Cera is an historic townhouse turned five star, 12 room hotel. The decor is elegant and traditional, with antique furniture and artworks. Some of the larger rooms and suites have private balconies, and there’s a fantastic rooftop terrace restaurant with stunning views.
The Hotel Tres is a super hip, minimalist hotel converted from a 16th Century building in the old town. There are 41 large rooms and suites - some with cathedral views, plus a spectacular rooftop terrace with a pool, sauna and panoramic views. There’s also lively courtyard bar.
Hospes Maricel is a wonderfully romantic hotel right on the Mediterranean, just along the coast from Palma in Carretera Andratx. There are 44 peaceful rooms, a wonderful restaurant on a beautiful sun terrace and an infinity pool which tumbles directly into the ocean.
The Castillo Hotel Son Vida is a beautiful 13th Century palace turned large hotel. Its location, in the hills above Palma, means it’s tranquil. It’s also elegant, with a real Spanish flavour, and spacious, and it’s got stunning views. There’s also all the facilities you’d expect from a large and luxurious hotel.
Palau sa Font is a boutique hotel converted from a wonderful 16th Century building in trendy La Lonja in Palma’s old town. There are 19 bright, airy rooms with handmade furniture, original contemporary art and Mediterranean style floors. There’s also a rooftop plunge pool and terrace with spectacular views.
The small but romantically formed Boutique Hotel Calatrava is a sleek, six room hotel right on the beach front in central Palma. The decor is sophisticated in pastels, and there’s a lovely little cafe/ bistro with views over Palma Bay and the ocean. Rooms start from around £140.
The Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel is a great luxury option for both families and those after an active holiday, as it’s got plenty of in-house facilities. As well as the golf bit in the name it’s also got several pools - indoor and outdoor, restaurants, tennis, bikes and a gym, plus a lovely spa.
