Maine is a destination that’s so romantic that it doesn’t even matter what you and your paramour think of as romantic, Maine will provide. Love fresh seafood eaten by the water? Love long strolls along interesting coastlines? Love sailing c,anoeing, kayaking or watersports generally? Love visiting museums, galleries and sights of historic interest? Love driving winding roads and talking about everything and anything? Love sitting peacefully in front of an open fire/water view reading and drinking wine? You get the idea... And the same thing applies to the best hotels in Maine for couples: whatever you love there will be a hotel offering you just that here. Our Gurus worked hard to keep their recommendations to just 20 hotels, and the final list includes picks for the most romantic hotels in Maine too!
For a Special Occasion
- 16 Bay View is a small, luxury-feeling hotel converted from a hundred year old, red-brick warehouse building facing Camden Harbor. There are just 21 rooms and suites, our favourites featuring fireplaces and balconies with sea views. But even if you don’t book one of those, you can still appreciate the incredible view from the panoramic rooftop bar and restaurant.
- Atlantean Cottage is a Tudor Revival home built by a famed Bar Harbor architect on one of the village’s prettiest streets, now turned into a luxurious, adults only B&B. Its eight rooms and suites are large and elegant, with fireplaces and/or big windows; there’s a parlour with a fireplace, plus a porch and garden: all perfect for relaxing in. There’s no restaurant, but they have a guest pantry, and you’re within a lovely stroll of lots of places to eat and drink.
For the Views
- The Boathouse Waterfront Hotel is right on the water of Kennebunkport’s port, with a bar and seafood restaurant that spills out onto a wrap-around balcony over the edge. There are just 25 rooms and suites, and our favourites have private balconies over the water as well. This is a relaxing spot, with idyllic New England views.
- The Bayview Hotel, Bar Harbor is an upscale choice in a secluded spot, right on the water on the edge of Bar Harbor. There are only 26 rooms and suites, all of them face the water, and have private, water-facing decks or balconies. The decor features simple colours, with with great art, and an interesting mix of antiques and contemporary furnishings, which varies from room to room. There’s no restaurant, but they offer a great vegetarian breakfast, and snacks, and it’s a pleasant walk into Bar Harbor from here.
- The Blair Hill Inn is set on its own 80 acre country estate overlooking a vast and lovely glacial lake — so there are water views, but possibly not the ones you were expecting! Despite all the space there are just ten rooms and suites, all very elegant, decorated with antiques, and featuring fireplaces and private balconies. There’s a spa and chic restaurant too. And acres of peace.
For a Beach Escape
- The Cottages at Cabot Cove are a collection of 16 cute cottages, hidden away in lush gardens. Each cottage is different, and includes self-catering facilities and a living space. The vibe is certainly very New England — think gingham fabrics, vintage finds and fittings, and pine ceilings. Baked goods are delivered fresh each morning, but there’s no restaurant.
- The Inn at Ocean's Edge is a 32 room inn siting on the edge of Penobscot Bay, between Camden and Lincolnville Beach. Freshly and comfortably renovated, the rooms and suites are spacious, with chairs and fireplaces, and deep carpets. The inn is known for its spa, the Poorhouse, and it’s got a charming restaurant too.
On the Waterfront
- The Balance Rock Inn is an historic inn with all the trimmings, in an enviable Bar Harbor location, overlooking the waters of Frenchman Bay. If you appreciate period furnishings, and luxurious fabrics then the Balance Rock Inn will please you; its 27 rooms and suites are well dressed in antiques, and elegant colours, and the bathrooms all have whirlpool baths. The restaurant is grown-up and romantic too.
- The Cape Arundel Inn & Resort is a traditional, New England inn, idyllically positioned on Walker’s Point, Kennebunkport. Its 30 rooms and suites are a collection of shapes and sizes, and are simply, but beautifully, decorated to make the most of their assets. Some have wooden fans and antiques, some private balconies, some fireplaces, and most have water views. There’s a pool in the large garden, and the restaurant is known for its New England fare. Adults only.
For New England Chic
- Intimate and traditional, and right on Camden’s water front, the Grand Harbor Inn feels like you’re in a classic New England inn, from its white board exterior, to its vast windows and fireplaces. There are just ten rooms, all uniquely decorated, and featuring top-of-the-range technology, private balconies, and the possibility of in-room breakfasts. There’s no restaurant, but there are lots of places to eat and drink within a very pleasant stroll.
- The Waldo Emerson Inn is another historic inn that really typifies a romantic New England holiday. White-boarded, with big, shuttered windows and a neatly manicured lawn, the exterior looks like a doll's house. Inside are six rooms, all individually decorated with florals and a country chic palette. The huge floorboards are original polished pine, and there are a wealth of other original features to appreciate too. The breakfasts are gourmet.
For Portland
- Portland’s Pomegranate Inn is an eight room B&B, with eccentric style which provides a backdrop for the treasure trove or local art and antiques. Located in the well preserved, Victorian Western Promenade neighbourhood, the Pomegranate fits its reputation of being sophisticated and foodie especially when you see the breakfast: a series of small plates offering an inventive range of flavours. The afternoon tea is impressive too.
- The Portland Harbor Hotel is a lively, 95 room hotel in Portland’s bustling Old Port District. The decor is a cool, contemporary take on the nautical theme, and the rooms and suites are light and spacious, with big bathrooms, and the communal spaces are chic but comfy. Some rooms have a sea view, like the seafood restaurant. There’s a gym, and guest pantries, and you can bring your pet.
For Fun
- Whitehall is a chic, but historic mansion, in picturesque Camden, carefully converted into a 36 room hotel. The decor is confident and colourful, with design pieces, bright colours and original art works. The bar and restaurant are cool, and the evenings often spill out onto the wrap-around porches, and into the courtyards with their fire pits. This is a versatile base for a romantic break, with loads to do in the area.
For an Adventure
- Under Canvas Acadia is a stylish glamp-site in the Acadia National Park, with a collection of 63 rather elegant permanent tents, complete with en-suite bathrooms, wood-burning stoves and rustic details that make all the difference. This is a great pick for families, but it’s also a really cosy, unique place to bring a loved one, perfect for lovers of the great outdoors and vast, empty skies.
For a Rural Retreat
- Wolf Cove Inn is a rural retreat, set beside a high beautiful lake. This is just the place to experience New England charm and the changing colours of the seasons. The inn has 26 rooms, in a range of styles and sizes, many with whirlpool baths, fireplaces and marble bathrooms. The inn’s barn has been converted into a fantastic restaurant, and another outbuilding has been converted into a spa. There’s also a large and lovely landscaped pool.
Romantic B&Bs
- Windward House is a beautiful, historic home in Camden, converted into an idyllic B&B by a thorough owner. Camden is arguably one of Maine’s prettiest port towns, and this B&B is a good match with the location, with eight individually decorated rooms and suites, with wooden floors, and some some cases fireplaces, jacuzzis, or four-poster beds. There’s also a pretty breakfast room, where they serve a two course breakfast, and expansive mature gardens.
- Cosy, historic and affordable, the Water Street Inn is a charmingly converted red-brick store-house with harbour views and a nautical colour palette. There are only eight rooms, some with self-catering facilities, and while there’s no restaurant, they do offer tea, coffee and snacks. There’s a quiet hours policy between 10pm and 8am, and they recommend their facilities for those ten years and up.
- Hartwell House Inn is a 16 room inn, spread between two different buildings, in the heart of pretty Perkins Cove, Ogunquit. This is a memorable place to stay, with individually decorated rooms that feature all sorts of luxurious features, from antique four-poster beds, to plush, velvet contemporary armchairs, to fireplaces and two person whirlpool tubs.
