1898 The Post is a very good reason indeed to go to Ghent – the Van Eyk brother’s famous (and glorious) altarpiece being another. Opened in 2017 in the old central post office building, this is an ingenious conversion. Many of the old Post Office architectural features have been retained – riveted iron girders and Gothic tracery windows - but the hotel is absolutely new and modern in design. The 37 bedrooms are mostly 2-tier, with the bathrooms upstairs in a loft (which may not suit everybody). The décor is stunningly theatrical - dark walls and floors off-set the crisp white linens and antique objets such as vintage Scrabble and leather suitcases (all of which are for sale – at a price). A hugely entertaining and glamourous cocktail bar called Cobblers is definitely the new hot ticket in town with people queueing to get in at popular times. If you can’t find a seat there, then there is a ‘honesty’ bar exclusively for hotel guests in what must surely be the former Post Master General’s splendid office. Breakfast (served in Cobblers) is a total treat – make sure you get a window table – sit back and relax in deep armchairs, sip your coffee and plan your day. Location wise you could not be a in a better spot, right in the historic centre, water-side, and surrounded by hip and happening restaurants and shops. Come here for a night on the way to Bruges, or as an excursion from Amsterdam or Antwerp. The trains are easy, swift and efficient.
