“Tucked away near the centre of one of the North York Moors’ most attractive market towns, this coaching-inn-turned-hotel offers all the ingredients for a country break: newspapers and fire in the lounge, sun-trap terrace and pool, small spa, country-chic bedrooms and handsome bistro food.”

Hotel review

Tucked around the corner from Helmsley’s Market Place, the Feversham Arms has the classic good looks of a market town inn, all mellow stone and window boxes. Explore further and you realise it is a cut above. For a start there’s a hidden outdoor pool surrounded by a sun-trap terrace – open all year round (it’s heated, you’ll be pleased to know). Beyond, there’s a sleek spa while surrounding the pool are a variety of contemporary-style suites. Some are country-chic in cool colours with tongue-and-groove panelling, pretty wallpapers and glass-fronted balconies; others, in converted outbuildings, have original beams, rugs on wooden floors and bold sunny colours of pink, sea-blue and egg-yolk yellow, plus patios. Bedrooms in the main house have quirkier shapes, and are more modern country house in style, with creamy carpets, milky-white walls and cottage-garden colours in headboards and armchairs. All but one room has a bath as well as a shower.

Food is Modern British with skilful but not pretentious cooking, and good local sourcing - North Sea halibut, Yorkshire lamb and local venison, for example – plus a vegetarian menu. There’s a comfortable bar lounge with sofas, newspapers and a log fire, or the quieter Library. Both are relaxing spaces after a brisk walk on the moors or an explore of the town with its castle, delightful Walled Garden and browsable shops. Alternatively, you could chill out in the spa and hot tub. In the summer the pool terrace is an all-day sun trap.
