What the Alex lacks in views, it makes up for in sheer character and comfort. Built in 1960 by illustrious mountain guide Alex Perren, and full of lavish, eccentric touches, it is run today by the dynamic next generation. Focal point is the square bar (lined with stools whose backrests are carved ibex heads) around which are ranged a variety of charmingly quirky enclaves, including an enchanting children’s stübli. There’s also a large pool, children’s playground, indoor tennis, squash, gym and spa. Rooms are opulent, with whirlpool baths. A fantastical yet charming hotel.
