Picton is the jumping-off point for exploring the secret bays and tree-cloaked islands and peninsulas of the magnificent Marlborough Sounds. It's also the principal inter-island ferry port of the South Island. If you're looking for somewhere modern and efficient, that's quiet yet central and offers excellent value for money, it's hard to beat this apartment-style motel.
A five-minute walk from the seafront, and set back from the road, its 19 ground- and first-floor rooms are spread across three pale-washed, low-rise buildings. Furnished in a light, Scandi style and most with king-size beds, the spacious, open-plan rooms include a well-equipped kitchen area and large bathroom - wet-room showers in the smaller, spa-baths in the largest. Most have space for a sofa plus all have a private patio or balcony. Neatly designed as opposed to luxurious, the rooms are nevertheless relaxing and full of thoughtful touches including good lighting, eco-friendly bathroom products and heated towel rails.
The space and flexibility - plus laundry facilities - are particularly welcome if you're in Picton to go hiking or kayaking. Day-walks or walking packages on the 45-mile Queen Charlotte Track are a great way to experience the Sounds, with views to North Island on a good day; try New Zealand Walks for a knowledgeable and friendly service, and which also offers a taxi service from the motel.
The motel offers a continental breakfast, or there's a supermarket opposite. For supper, try Le Cafe or Cortado's, both on the harbour with cracking views.
