Set in Lisbon’s fashionable Principe Real district, with far-reaching views across the city to the Tagus River, memmo Príncipe Real is a perfect blend of contemporary elegance rooted in Portuguese history. Dazzlingly designed by architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho, who has drawn on local materials from warm limestone to old hand-painted tiles and modern Portuguese art. Details include hand-blown glass lamps and hand-made hats from an old, established, neighbouring store which hang in the bedrooms. Many of these have balconies or terraces and two bedrooms come with outdoor fires on their terraces.
The food in the Colonial Café, a sleek restaurant, which looks out over the long, green-tiled, swimming pool and the city beyond, is a nod to Portugal’s time as a colonial power. On its black marble tables, beautifully contrasting with the moss-green velvet sofas, expect dishes such as a delicate black cod with miso butter, or a mousse of chocolate from São Tomé with a banana mousse and a salty, peanut pralineto to be served.
There is a free 1 hour walking tour every morning which introduces guests to the local area and starts in the pretty Príncipe Real gardens which neighbour the hotel.

"From the outside, the hotel appears stark, white and boldly geometric but inside it's all open-plan and contemporary, done out in a mix of moss-green and pale oak, with good, modern art on the walls and bespoke furniture designed by Torres de Carvalho. The 41 bedrooms are cosy hideways, with hand-blown lamps, warm wooden floors and bathrooms lined in local limestone. Ingredients for the hotel's signature Colonial cocktail - dry white port, Campari, tonic and a twist of orange rind - wait to be mixed."
