It helps to know your ryokan etiquette before visiting one of these traditional guest-houses, although the welcoming staff here are well-trained to ignore any inadvertent faux pas. Leave your shoes at the door, don a yukata robe (wrap the left side of fabric over the right side: the opposite is how the dead are dressed!) and enjoy all the rituals associated with a ryokan. The onsen hot spring baths are small but offer both indoor and outdoor bathing (again, gen up on all the rules). Dinner is the multi-course kaiseki, which is served in your room. The beautifully presented dishes showcase highly-skilled preparation of regional and seasonal ingredients. The location is perfect, being in the historic quarter with its beautiful merchants’ buildings, near to the riverfront and 10 minutes’ walk from the station.
