Hotel Review

In a plum-perfect location in the city, equidistant to the main districts of Baixa, Bairro Alto and Alfama, this hotel takes its name from the grand and leafy avenue on which it sits. Although all is hectic and bustling outside, step through the doors of this patrician 18th-century building, and you’re immediately enveloped in a luxurious calm of polished-wood floors, traditional azulejo tiling, soothing creams and cappuccinos, and a cool lounge-bar of inviting sofas. Bedrooms follow the same understatedly luxurious and contemporary-classic style, nicely uncluttered and with generous, often naturally lit, bathrooms. The latter tend to the traditional, but the style fits with the grandeur of the building - and a building, incidentally, with a striking blue-and-white façade. No meals other than breakfast - the latter is fine, if slightly international in feel (many guest are American or on business) - and there are free hot drinks and welcome glasses of port. To help you relax after a day on the city’s steep streets, there’s a small basement pool.
