Hotel Review

The majestic, pine-covered mountains and glaciers around Sonamarg are like something out of The Sound of Music. And Ahsan Mount Resort, nestled in a valley right beside the River Sindh, is surrounded by this scenic beauty. Founded by Yasub, Isam and Minam Wani, three charismatic brothers from Srinagar, this is Kashmir’s first glamping retreat. The nine khaki-canvas tents are well insulated and equipped with huge double beds, heated mattresses, fleece sheets, duvets, paisley printed carpets, elegant dressing tables and full-length mirrors. Although the camp sprawls along the Kargil-Skardu Road, the thundering river rushing past drowns out any noise. From here, you can walk the six kilometres to the Thajiwas Glacier above Sonamarg or go trout-fishing on the Sindh. Warm up afterwards by sipping steaming kahwa from copper samovars in one of the space-age daybed pods. In the evenings, you can sit around a blazing campfire, just metres from the roaring river, eating scrumptious Kashmiri food (paneer butter masala, mutton roganjosh or grilled rainbow trout), sipping cocktails (remember to bring your own liquor) and smoking shisha under the stars.
