“A grand country house with all-round appeal – from spa-lovers to active families – with mesmerising views over Lake Bassenthwaite in the quieter northern lakes. A choice of traditional or contemporary rooms plus fine dining and comfort food.”

Hotel review

With sweeping views down the length of Lake Bassenthwaite and the surrounding fells, and with no near neighbours, Armathwaite Hall feels deep in the country. And yet busy Keswick is only six miles away. As impressive as the views is the building, a former Victorian stately home with towers, battlements, vast mullioned windows, and sitting in 400 acres of deer park and gardens. Public rooms are grand with high ceilings, wood panelling and gilt-framed paintings yet furnished in a contemporary style: velvet and leather armchairs, softly glowing table lamps and swag-free curtains. The bar, with its enormous carved fireplace and rich blue walls, is a suitably clubby room for pre-dinner drinks while the elegant drawing room, in soft greys and with views towards the lake, seems designed for the hotel’s eye-popping afternoon tea. Dining is a choice between casual dishes in the Brasserie and more polished cooking in the Lake View Restaurant. Work up an appetite with walks around the grounds or neighbouring Wildlife Park. Or just give in to some serious pampering in the spa, a sprawling affair spreadover two floors. Bedrooms are split between the modern spa wing and the original hall with the latter more traditional and with original features while the former spoil with terraces and balconies.
