Housed in a scatter of historic Venetian buildings, this was the first hotel in the ancient walled town of Monemvasia (Greece's Gibraltar), on the east coast of the Peloponnese. It has spawned a number of rivals, but is still the best. Rooms have wooden floors, striped rag rugs, antique wooden chests and chairs; most also have balconies with dazzling views. A breakfast of honey, nuts, rice pudding and yoghurt, fresh figs and freshly-squeezed juice on a verandah overlooking tumbledown walls and red tiled roofs, is close to heaven. Expect no hotel grandeur, but an utterly charming stay. There is no pool, so spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
