Two and a half hours from Rio in the popular resort of Buzios, the Cachoeira Inn, meaning waterfall in Portuguese, is an addendum to our Rio list, but well worth the expedition. In Buzios, you’ll find beaches, shops, restaurants and beach buggies which can be hired to zip around the peninsula. This heavenly tropical oasis fusing Brazilian and Asian architecture opened in 2008. Perfectly positioned for guests to gaze at magnificent sunsets against a backdrop of Ferradura Bay and the distant hills, as turtles swim in the clear blue waters below. Ideal for romantic getaways, the Cachoeira Inn has five exquisitely comfortable suites, unique in design and decor, with art from around the world, and can be booked by private groups. With nine waterfalls, pools, a swim-up bar, tropical gardens and two private beaches with ocean access (allowing for excellent snorkeling around the multi-level reef), indulge yourself in serene luxury as you sip your perfectly judged caipirinha under a coconut palm, swinging in your hammock, cooled by a gentle ocean breeze. The owners Susan and Matt are charming and ever helpful. A gem.
