It’s all about location at the traditional green-and-white painted Embajador. A peaceful oasis in the busy seaside town of Playa Blanca, this former diplomat’s residence is pitched at couples who don’t fancy haring around in a hire car. Restaurants, shops and two fine beaches are all two minutes’ walk away, but the hotel itself is fantastically low key. The 12 rooms are plain but charming, with terracotta tiled floors and white or pretty blue walls. Relax on the geranium-packed sea-front terrace, or potter down to the sea via steps cut into the lava. No air-con.
