Looking out over one of the two squares that bookend fashionable George Street in the city’s New Town, this impressive neo-classical 1930s building was once the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Restored to showcase its original styling of wood-panelling, marble floors and brass-work this has been combined with a sleek modern design of bold geometric carpets, deep-coloured walls and statement lampshades.
Apartments, which range from studio and one-bedroom to a three-bedroom penthouse, share the same high-spec design though vary in shape and layout. All are spacious with dark-wood floors, off-white walls, Italian furniture and pops of colour in velvet sofas. Each has a fully-fitted kitchen; alternatively The Register Club offers tasty tapas-style dishes, plus killer cocktails, in a lounge-y vibe. If this doesn't whet your appetite, there are more than enough restaurants and bars within spitting distance.
Expect hotel-style service and facilities from the friendly and helpful reception staff to room service and a vast basement gym. Dogs and children are made very welcome, too.

Start with a former bank in a very grand location, add an exclusive club-style bar, headline restaurant and design-led rooms, and you create destination accommodation that's catnip to the cognoscenti – even if it’s a little light on some elements of five-star luxe once you get upstairs.
