Tucked away on the vehicle-free island of Hydra, Cotommatae 1810 offers a stay in a unique Hydroit stone mansion. This early 19th-century Captain’s house, originally built in 1810 by the Koutoumas family, one of the island’s most prominent shipping dynasties, is a beautiful testament to Hydra’s golden age–when elite naval families oversaw the Aegean’s maritime trade and helped shape modern Greece during the War of Independence. Today, Cotommatae has been carefully restored into a boutique hotel, retaining all of its historical gravitas while introducing thoughtful, discreet comforts.
Inside, the layout remain faithful to the original. Downstairs suites, rich with dark wood panelling, create a snug, cocoon-like atmosphere perfect for the cooler months. Upstairs rooms, by contrast, are brighter, with painted walls and light streaming in through traditional windows. There are five spacious suites and two standard rooms, all with double beds, Guy Laroche linens, and a curated selection of antiques from the family’s personal collection. It’s akin to staying in a private home as opposed to a hotel. Friendly touches abound: the resident tortoise ambles through the courtyard, and the local cats, known for their affectionate personalities on Hydra, are just as welcoming.
For those craving authentic character, Cotommatae delivers. Despite its hushed setting, the vibrant port with its art galleries, artisan boutiques, and cafés is just a 10-minute walk away—a perfect distance for retreat and access in equal measure.
Note: due to the heritage architecture, there’s no elevator, and steep indoor and outdoor stairs—which can be slippery—may pose a challenge for those with mobility concerns.

This exquisite boutique hotel was originally built in 1810, then acquired and modified by a local sponge magnate in 1901 and has been in the same family ever since. High perimeter walls disclose nothing of the splendour inside...
