Hotel Review
Unlike the flashy chain establishments, there’s no signpost for Diphlu River Lodge. Instead, two discreet words on the gate read, ‘Private Property’, so at once, you know you’re in for something really exclusive. Four of the 12 stilted cottages are on the riverbank, overlooking Kaziranga, and the other eight encircle a meadow – which, depending on the season, is either a carpet of mustard flowers or a shimmering paddy-field. Their ethnic-chic design – thatched roofs, mud-coloured walls, bamboo beams, wicker furniture, hand-woven wall hangings – echoes the homes of the Mising tribe; and French windows make the most of fabulous views, allowing the sunlight to pour in from private balconies. Every detail has been considered: the pots of Assamese tea, torches by the beds and a plate of biscuits for post-safari munchies. Manager, Ranesh Roy, is a fountain of knowledge and amusing anecdotes. He’s also passionate about the resort’s eco philosophy, so you’ll receive a letter on how to reduce light and noise pollution. Drinks and meals are served in The Machan, which has traditional Naga hats on its walls and old-fashioned deckchairs, from where you can observe one-horned rhinos across the river.
