Hotel Review
An innovative boutique hotel above ZARA on Stephansplaz, one of the most recognisable squares in the heart of Vienna’s busy shopping district. The plain modern exterior (cylindrical and glass clad) of DO & CO by architect Hans Hollein, makes an interesting counter point to the surrounding Baroque splendour of the city and the awe-inspiring St Stephen’s Cathedral which is immediately opposite. The somewhat unprepossessing hotel entrance belies the uber cool interior with staff to match. DO & CO is part of a well-known international catering company and the standards of hospitality here are high. The buzzing ONYX bar, and rooftop restaurant with panoramic views and an outdoor area are consistently booked out by a young, professional, trendy and well-heeled crowd. Make sure you reserve your spot even as a hotel guest. All of the 43 rooms have a full picture window overlooking the square – and it’s wonderful to enjoy a bird’s eye view of milling shoppers and tourists from the peace and tranquillity of your sleekly luxurious bedroom. The rooms are very comfortable with well thought out use of space – such as a concealed tech cupboard to plug in and charge one’s countless modern devices. The glass enclosed bathrooms have plantation shutters to pull across if you do not wish to bare your all. If you like modern design and comfort this makes a great choice and the location is unparalleled – you are within easy walking distance from many of Vienna’s most famous attractions: the Opera House, the Albertina Museum, the Spanish Riding School and more. Not to mention being right on top of the shops. Take the nearby underground to go further afield to the Museum District or Schonbrunn – it’s cheap, efficient and easy. Ditto the local train from the airport – no need for the expensive City Express!
