This classic Georgian country-house feels remote yet is only two miles from the A1 and 10 minutes from the coast. Sympathetically extended it has all the classic Georgian features of sash windows, Doric pillars, decorative cornicing and handsome-sized rooms. Although much of the furniture and decorative detailing is reproduction – including a spectacular, carved-wood staircase – it feels elegant and light-filled with charming areas such as the Morning Room and Library in which to relax. Bedrooms are generous with handsome furniture and thick curtains with nice touches of Northumbrian landmarks in the paintings. All have decent views; the best overlook the garden. There are 10 acres of grounds, including a fun, yew-tree maze. Be aware, this is as much a place for families as for couples. After a day exploring beaches and castles – or nearby Alnwick Garden – relax in the spa and pool, or treat yourself to the hotel’s famed afternoon tea – on the terrace in the summer. But leave room for dinner which is quite a posh affair, so you might want to pack your glad-rags.
