In 2014, French architects Tina Trigala and Yves Lesprit renovated this 19th-century manor in Puducherry’s old quarter, and transformed it into a stylish abode for the weary traveller. Original colonial details are still very much present, but local handicrafts and materials have been used to create a modern look, such as wicker lanterns hanging from the ceilings, new Kadappa stone floors and Chettinad tiles. The six suites are individually named and unique – for example, in India Song, lyrics of a song from the French drama of the same name are painted on the bathroom door. All are equally sophisticated, with chalk-white walls, teakwood furniture, space-age reading lights, silver desk lamps and contemporary art. There’s a small but rather lovely rooftop swimming pool, where you can sip freshly squeezed juices or cocktails under a shady mango tree. The staff members are attentive but respectful of your privacy. French classics are served at lunch and dinner in the leafy courtyard and in the morning you can have a sumptuous poolside feast of French pastries, Coorg honey and baguettes so good you might even think you’re in France.
