Standing on one side of the attractive Avenida dos Aliados, which is dominated by Porto’s neo-classical town hall, the Monumental Palace, complete with Gothic façade, cuts an impressive picture. Step inside to find a careful mix of 21st century luxury and many original, Art Deco elements from its creation in 1923. The décor brims with the glamour of the 1920’s and 1930’s , drawing on old black and white photographs, bespoke wallpapers and a colour palette of turquoise and muted gold.
There is a sleek Nuxe Spa, with heated indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath.
The bedrooms are spacious, many offering views of the city skyline, and all clad in uplifting colours. Bathrooms come in shades of pale green or grey with both rain showers and tubs and Art Deco style trimmings.
The hotel is hugely food-orientated, with several seriously impressive outlets. The Monumental Café, one of the city’s best in the 1930’s, has been revived, its tables spilling out onto the pavement. Dishes to choose from include oysters from Aveiro or seabass cooked in puff pastry. In the gastronomic Le Monument Restaurant, Chef Julien Montbabut delivers fine dining. Recommended is his delicious crab, avocado and yuzu chequerboard, but grab a cocktail first at the American Bar, such as an American Martini with cardamom, vodka, ginger and lemon juice.
