This 18th-century palazzo was the summer retreat of the aristocratic Sersale family, and although it has all the accoutrements you’d expect to find in a luxury hotel, it still feels more like a home. Filled with lovely things – Venetian and Neapolitan antiques, oil paintings and carefully chosen objects – it is still owned and professionally run by the family themselves. The bedrooms are fresh, white-walled havens with vaulted ceilings and hand-made floor tiles. Most of them look out over the bay and have their own private terrace or balcony. Top-flight Neapolitan food is served in the restaurant, La Sponda, where 400 candles are lit every evening. Pure romance.

"Le Sirenuse may be expensive, but it’s refreshingly unstuffy, a place that feels at once venerable and grand (its restaurant has a Michelin star), but also palpably like someone’s home, a place filled with heirlooms, antiques and pictures that have passed down the generations and continue to grow."

"An exceptionally romantic candle-lit dining room, a shady pool terrace and small but beautifully presented spa make it particularly popular with honeymooners, well-heeled European couples, touring Americans and occasional celebrities."
