“Although close to Bowness, this large Edwardian property, in seven acres of gardens, offers a quiet country-house retreat with a relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere. Gently modernised, it combines elegance with a bright contemporary feel, and smart cooking. ”

Hotel review

Up a curving drive through mature gardens and woodland, this hotel feels a world away from bustling Bowness, although the latter is only a five-minute car journey. Originally an Edwardian private house with an extensive terrace overlooking lawns, trees and the wooded slopes of the far shores of Lake Windermere, it still retains a quiet elegance yet subtly modernised. In truth it's a small country house hotel without the fuss and formality.

There's a wood-panelled hall, stained glass windows, plasterwork ceilings and open fires, but bold-coloured walls and wallpapers, sleek modern armchairs, a startling sea-blue bar and a library of books you might actually want to read.

Bedrooms, too, mix a classic country-house style with a light modern touch: shimmery wallpapers, light-wood or painted furniture, upholstered armchairs and a deep sense of comfort without clutter. Bathrooms are impressively well thought-through, and with good lighting and storage. The best rooms have lake views but those with garden and woodland views are no less comfortable.

The long dining room, with its row of picture windows, has been designed so every table has a view over the garden, and to the wooded slopes beyond. The short-choice menu offers classic dishes with a sophisticated twist: salted cod with scorched cauliflower, or pork tenderloin with puréed apple. The service, as at breakfast (omelettes to smoked haddock rarebit) is professional yet friendly. In fact, the welcoming atmosphere of the hotel ensures you'll soon be on chatting terms with your fellow guests.

See what they say

Why do people love staying in your hotel? The views, the gardens and the nurturing home-from-home atmosphere. We always try to go the extra mile to look after our guests.

What is there to do in the area? Lots! Some of the Lake District's best walking and cycling routes are right on our doorstep. Lots of boutique shopping. Or just rest by our fire and take in the view, indulge in one of our afternoon teas, wander the gardens...

What kind of breakfast do you offer? We offer a two course breakfast menu. Set yourself up for the day with a full English breakfast, or options such as poached smoked haddock, rarebit, vine tomato and spinach. As the saying goes, ‘breakfast like a king’, an instruction we take seriously.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We do a little more than expected of a B&B, with our dining options for the rest of the day – including our Restaurant Menu served at lunchtime and the early evening. Our views and garden terraces are difficult to tear yourself away from, so if you’re here to simply relax and don’t want to go elsewhere, we’ve got a satisfying choice of food to see you through the day. It’s informal dining at its best. Of course we do Afternoon Tea, a very proper one with finger sandwiches, buttermilk scones with jam and cream, and sweet treats. In Summer it’s an extra treat to enjoy it on the garden terraces taking in the views. We also have an in-house bar so you can enjoy a drink to complement your food. As a sister property to Storrs Hall Hotel you are able to dine with them, from their lunchtime informal menu or evening A La Carte, with a 10% discount off a dining bill of over £40.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? They're all popular!  But our Master Bedrooms are particularly special - their views are beautiful.

What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? Lindeth Fell welcomes guests over the age of 12.

What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? We can't wait to look after you!
