The baby of an experienced husband and wife team who run a successful hotel management company, Maison Albar Hotels was conceived to create small luxury boutique hotels where the client feels like one of the family. Indeed the byword is "Casually Luxurious". And I can confirm that this concept has been a success! Le Vendome is a testament to their ethos that guest and staff are equally important and this shines through in the service and attitude from all concerned. Nothing is too much trouble! The property has been converted from an interesting building close to both the Opera Garnier and Place Vendome. It was originally a Russian Bank (original mosaic walls can been seen on the staircase down to the spa, which has been created from the vault), then became a grand Parisien brasserie (the moody black exterior from those days has stayed and there is a lion’s head on every bedroom door – a reference to those days when it was called the Le Lion d’Or). Maison Albar Hotels rescued the building and have spent a considerable sum transforming it into the chic five star property that you’ll find today. There are 51 rooms and suites, all done in the same style with muted tones brought to life with opulent gold fixtures and splashes of deep blue. The beds deserve a mention too for being supremely comfortable! Bathrooms are no less indulgent: white marble, huge walk-in showers and spoiling Casita toiletries. For a special treat you should book the Opera Suite: its private roof terrace has stunning views over the Opera Garnier. Food wise the offering here is extraordinary. Yakuza restaurant is the Paris outpost of Portuguese celebrity chef Olivier Da Costa’s successful brand. The dishes are sublime and offer fabulous Japanese cuisine which is delivered with a slight Mediterranean twist. If you can, try to book a seat at the chef’s prep area, then you can see how the magic is made! Breakfast is also served in the Yakuza restaurant, but don’t worry, it’s just delicious French all the way here: pastries, cheese, ham – you know the drill! For warmer days there’s a small courtyard garden (great for drinking, dining or just hanging out), where it’s so quiet you could almost forget that you’re in the very centre of Paris. Last but certainly not least is the subterranean spa. This is a very indulgent space where you’ll find a lovely pool and hot tub area, surrounded by luxurious sofas in arched alcoves, and off to the side are the treatment rooms, hammam and sensory shower. The perfect end to a day pounding the city streets.
