Hotel Review
The Marktgasse boutique hotel lies at the heart of the cobbled old town - an unbeatable location. As you’d expect from a building that dates back 600 years, it has its quirks: think uneven floorboards and odd ceiling heights, though these certainly don’t detract from the hotel’s charm and personality. Following a clever renovation, this young hotel has heaps of appeal. Chic rooms have an eclectic yet pared-down feel and are exceedingly comfy. Some have even retained various historic elements such as exposed columns, playful frescoes, or tiled stoves. Crucially, all are equipped with air-conditioning to cope with the summer heat. Bathrooms aren’t huge but are smart and well appointed with indulgent Aesop products. In addition to the 39 individually designed rooms and suites, further features include a cosy library (with board games as well as books), a fitness centre, and the excellent Restaurant and Bar Balthos - a regular on several “Best in Zurich” lists. Breakfast, served in the Delish cafe downstairs, is superb. The Marktgasse’s unimposing exterior disguises the comfort and attention to detail that lies within. A slick and stylish hotel.

Why do people love staying in your hotel?
The location in the old town and the history of the place combined with the contemporary design is a real pull for our guests, as well as the extensive on-site food & beverage options. Both the bar and our all-day delicatessen open out onto the street meaning that it’s not just hotel guests eating and drinking but also the locals, which we find is reason people like staying at the Marktgasse.
What is there to do in the area?
As mentioned above, one of the unique charms of the Marktgasse Hotel is its unbeatable position in the heart of the Old Town. It’s just a stone’s throw from many of the city’s best attractions, which include numerous Christmas markets in winter, the Fraumünster and Grossmünster Abbeys, the glamourous Bahnohofstrasse shopping avenue and Lake Zurich just a short walk away, which boasts a host of open air lidos in summer.
What kind of breakfast do you offer?
Delish is a delicatessen-style eatery offering a selection of different breakfast options which range from healthy chia seed puddings and yoghurt with fruit to our delectable selection of fresh pastries, with the cinnamon buns and buttery croissants being firm favourites. We also serve a choice of cooked breakfasts as well as home-made granola and a selection of fresh meats and cheeses.
Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
In addition to Delish, which at lunch and dinner serves up a delicious menu of healthy salads, quiches, pastries and tarts, our sister restaurant Baltho is a popular brasserie style eatery with adjoining cocktail bar and a deliberately pared-down menu of international classics for lunch and dinner. Be sure to try our Bang Bang Chicken, renowned city-wide!
Which are your most popular room types, and why?
The Generous Rooms and Junior Suites, because most of them have some unique features such as stucco ceilings, original wooden panelling, columns or tiled stoves.
What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ?
The Baltho offers a Kids Table on Saturdays and Sundays at lunch and there are social games and books for children in the library. For toddlers there are baby cribs and the Junior Suites feature daybeds that can be converted in extra beds.
What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
A unique addition to Zurich’s Hotel panorama, the Marktgasse Hotel combines 15th Century history with 21st technology and design, all in a bohemian setting and just steps from the lake and Zurich’s main railway train station.
