“An idyllic, off-the-beaten-track hideaway on Myanmar’s first vineyard, not far from Inle Lake. This is a wonderful place to relax, eat and drink. Rooms are simple and welcoming, housed in teak lodges with private terraces overlooking the vineyards. Ideal for tours and tastings. ”

Hotel Review
The lodge at Myanmar 1st Vineyard Estate (also known as Aythaya) is an obligatory stop-off for wine lovers. Pioneer and founder Bert Morsbach imported vines from Europe in 1998 and the first bottles hit the shelves in 2001; next came the restaurant; and then the lodge. So far, there are three minimalist teak bungalows on stilts, each with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, which fold back completely onto a balcony, from which the views of the vines, the Aythaya Valley and the misty hills beyond are magnificent. The stylish bathrooms are built with natural materials, such as slate, pebbles and wood, with his-and-hers basins and quirky outdoors rainforest showers. When you’re bored of reading a book on your balcony with a glass of sauvignon blanc, you can enjoy a vineyard tour and wine-tasting, followed by dinner at Sunset Wine Garden Restaurant, where you can feast in a romantic island gazebo, in a lily pond lit with miniature street lanterns. Menu highlights include wine leaves stuffed with mutton, long bean salad, steamed butterfish and a super-spicy Kachin soup, washed down with oodles of Aythaya wine, of course.
