For many people, Grasmere is the epitome of Lake District charm: a pretty village, babbling brook, island-dotted lake, grassy fells and a dollop of culture with its Wordsworth associations (he lived at the impossibly cute Dove Cottage and is buried in the churchyard). And it's hard to get more central than Moss Grove Organic at the heart of the village. As its name suggests, the slate-built, Victorian property is strong on environmental principles; in the early years of this century it was given a bold makeover to include clay-based paints, sheep's-wool insulation, natural-ink-printed wallpapers, plenty of natural materials (wood, leather, bamboo) and a focus on organic produce. The look is airy and uncluttered or a little stark and austere, depending on your point of view. But certainly it makes for large bedrooms with handsome pieces of recycled-timber furniture, bold feature wallpapers and unusually big bathrooms - all with spa-baths. Choose the ground-floor suite, and you get a private hot-tub too! Breakfasts are a highlight; a Mediterranean-style spread that runs from fresh fruit salad, bircher muesli, nuts and dried fruit to savoury crostini, meats, cheeses, spring rolls and roasted vegetables and homemade bread. Everything is organic, local or Fair Trade and in the afternoon, there’s help-yourself, home-made cake. Grasmere has plenty of eating choices within strolling distance, a favourite being The Jumble Room with its colourful interiors and Pan-Asian style cooking.
