“The perfect base for those wanting to be in the heart of Covent Garden and Theatreland. Classic on the outside, but wonderfully contemporary on the inside. Spacious rooms and suites, buzzy lobby bar, superb dining and a luxury spa for relaxing after a hard day's sightseeing! ”

Hotel review

Aside from its cracking West End location in the very heart of London’s Theatre Land, One Aldwych has two other star attractions. There is very groovy 18 metre chlorine-free swimming pool in the basement complete with under-water music and mood lighting to ensure those lengths glide by effortlessly. And on the ground floor, the spectacular double height Lobby Bar with floor to ceiling windows on all sides is simply one of the best places in London to sit, relax, have breakfast, drink cocktails, enjoy bar food and light lunches and take afternoon tea, while watching the world of busy people and red buses go by. Originally commissioned as the home of the Morning Post newspaper, this iconic narrow building stands on the corner of The Aldwych and Strand and was designed by Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis (the duo behind both the Paris and London Ritzes), Some say it is their finest work. Following an exhaustive overhaul in 2018-19, the building’s classic exterior belies the contemporary space that now exists within. The fine modern art collection adds to the trendy vibe – and how great it is to see things on a properly big scale, including the floral centrepiece which is an artwork in itself – think vast over-blown hydrangeas and burgeoning peonies. The skilfully renovated bedrooms and bathrooms impart a feeling of tranquillity, wellness and modern luxury and are thoroughly eco. Decorated in the palest shades with interesting and (apparently) eco-friendly surfaces giving visual interest. Even the state of the art sewage system is environmentally compliant. If you do not feel pampered enough in your room then you can indulge yourself in the world-class spa with treatments from Spanish skincare specialist, Natura Bissé and British skincare brand OSKIA and again not forgetting the pool. Two restaurant options are on offer: Indigo, overlooking the Lobby Bar serves modern British cuisine without gluten or dairy and executed with great aplomb. Prices are reasonable, particularly for a 5 star hotel. Go for the tasting menu and you’ll be in for a treat. The alternative is the relaxed and vibrant Eneko Basque Kitchen and Bar which produces modern Basque dishes, pintxos to share or something more substantial and not forgetting the cocktails with a twist. Both establishments are worthy of a visit and won’t disappoint. One Aldwych is the perfect luxury base for those wanting to be in the West End and take in some shows. The level of service and staff attention to detail is outstanding.
