Wind your way between the sugar cane fields to the mouth of Grande Rivière Sud-Est, Mauritius' longest river. Here, 12 spacious safari tents are perched on stilts, facing palm trees and mangroves. Interiors are simple yet comfortable, with big cosy mattresses set on pallets, and plenty of options for families to share larger spaces. Step down wood-hewn steps into bathrooms with rain showers, or kick back in butterfly chairs on shaded decks. 

A wonderful eco-escape, Otentic prides itself on offering a laid-back, authentic — the clue is in the name! — experience of Mauritius. The team are warm and friendly, cooking up hearty Creole curries, zingy salads and seafood for generous lunches and dinners, and brimming with recommendations for activities in the area.

Gather around the pool for refreshing dips, games or darts, or to read as brightly coloured birds flit overhead. Bicycles are available for zipping along marked trails, plus there are great hikes in the island's interior. Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding excursions, however, are not to be missed — there's a stunning waterfall within easy reach. Thrill-seekers can hone their kite surfing skills out on the lagoon, whilst more relaxed explorers will adore hopping aboard the shuttle to dazzling Ile aux Cerfs for mornings of white sand and sunshine. A rare glamping hideaway led by a passionate team in a tranquil corner of the island.
