“A collection of cabanas and villas metres from the beach. Rooms are decorated with bright, pop colours, a sit out terrace and huge outdoor showers (in some a bath). The restaurant serves a buffet breakfast and fresh seafood. There is a pool and spa. This is barefoot luxury at a reasonable price. ”

Hotel Review

Located in the quieter, lesser travelled north of the island this property is the perfect place to end your trip. Relax and unwind from your private terrace with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. These are not the usual dark, pokey beach shacks, they are fully equipped with four poster beds, sitting areas and huge outdoor shower rooms. Sunflower Cabana is by far the largest and most secluded. The villas are set further back in the property however all feature air conditioning, some with private gardens and outdoor bathtubs. There is a bar and lounge area with an extensive board game collection and screening movies of your choice. A welcomed emphasis on seafood means that food is always fresh. However, whilst superbly executed the menu is a little limited so if staying for a while guests may want to venture further afield. A buffet breakfast and afternoon tea are served daily. There is a spa with several Ayurvedic treatments and plenty of activities on site. The dolphin watching trip is an absolute must for "100% guaranteed" dolphin sightings. We like those odds!

Sri Lanka: island in the storm

We cut across salt pans and through wind farms, taking red-dust roads until we arrive at Alankuda Beach, home to Palagama Beach resort and four neighbouring properties. These were bought by Balmond and several friends some years back, and each has created its own idea of paradise.

COOL WATERS IN SRI LANKA

A finger of land extending out into the Indian Ocean from halfway up Sri Lanka's west coast, Kalpitiya is mostly home to fishermen, but its sparsely beautiful beaches are drawing a growing crowd in search of some of the world's best kite-surfing between May and September. Ambitions to develop it as a mass tourist destination have recently stalled, meaning just a handful of hotels make up the emerging beach scene.
