Rooms and suites in this tall historic building (once the home of Venetian dukes) are on three floors, so the noise-free lift (unusual in the old town) is a treat even for fit guests. Top floor suite has its own rooftop patio with whirlpool; six others have wooden balconies overhanging narrow Odos Douca. Many Chania old town hotels advertise rooftop views that turn out to be less than picturesque (think stovepipes, solar panels, satellite dishes and washing lines). The views from the terrace of Palazzo Duca's uppermost suite, and from the balconies of other rooms, are more what you'd hope for, with glimpses across a narrow street to the domes of a historic Turkish hammam and the blue water of the old harbour, which is less than 100 yards away. In the soothingly neutral-coloured rooms, guests find polished wood floors, exposed wooden beams and stonework, and double beds with anatomical Cocomat mattresses, bathrooms with fluffy robes and slippers, and mini-kitchenettes with tea and coffee-making facilities and a stock-it-yourself fridge. Breakfast is served in your room or in the ground-floor breakfast room. There's a shared roof terrace for sunset drinks.
