The view from almost any room at the brand-new Pedras do Mar Resort & Spa, on the sparsely populated rugged northern coast of the Azorean island of São Miguel, is breathtaking. Opened in April 2016, the hotel offers private balconies and glass-fronted bathrooms to ensure that guests get the full impact of the crashing ocean to the north (rooms cost more) or spectacular mountain views to the south. Well-equipped rooms and common areas in calming neutrals feature wooden accents and glass. Families and more active guests can enjoy tennis, a games room and large spa, which boasts an indoor heated pool and the piece de resistance, a gargantuan outdoor infinity pool perched above the sea. The hotel's Meia Nau Bar, designed to mimic the volcanic basalt hues of the island, offers excellent cocktails and the hotel’s open plan restaurant serves a wealth of uniquely Azorean cuisine. Pedras do Mar’s secluded location makes it desirable for those wishing to steep themselves in the Azores’ natural beauty – a popular hiking path runs by the hotel – and nod off to the sounds of waves breaking below.
