Peter Island feels very much like dying and going to heaven. On a 5,000 acre private island off Tortola, happiness descends as you board the private ferry for the five mile journey. The lowest room class gives you about 200 feet, plus a terrace overlooking one of the two pools, and a generous bathroom. More expensive ones open onto the beach. Décor is chic chintz. The hotel’s (truly) private beach is a perfect crescent (the palm trees were transplanted) of perfect sand. With lots of space there is no need to compete for sunloungers. Sailing and windsurfing is on hand, included, and other water sports are offered. At the end of the beach nestles a world class spa, overlooking a much more dramatic shore, with a second pool. Food is competent (not epic), drinks are epic (and not outrageous). Service is Caribbean, but less so than in most Caribbean hotels. A favourite US honeymoon spot, Peter Island is utterly memorable and utterly relaxing.
