Although only 10 minutes from the bustle of the A1(M), and not far from industrial Teesside, once through the entrance gates Rockliffe Hall feels like another country. More a resort hotel than country house hotel, it ticks all the boxes for the active – golf, fishing, tennis, swimming – and hits all the right buttons – spa, hydrotherapy pool, spa garden - for those (most of us, if we’re honest) who want to chill and recharge.
The original brick and sandstone Georgian and Victorian hall has been much extended, though sympathetically, into a new wing of bedrooms and a vast semi-circular spa complex. Everything about the hotel is spacious, from the bedrooms (even entry-level rooms are the size of suites) to the 375-acre estate with woodland walks, walled garden, children’s adventure playground and championship golf course. Bedrooms are immensely comfortable – choose between traditional in the Old Hall, and more contemporary in the New – with marbled bathrooms with TVs, if a little lacking in pizazz. Families might prefer the self-catering apartments and houses which still allow access to all the hotel’s facilities.
Eating options range from fine dining in the Orangery – a delightful room in the Old Hall, with smart Modern British dishes such as halibut with preserved wild garlic, and their signature chocolate pave - to more robust menus in the Clubhouse. The spa’s Nu Sana restaurant offers Asian-style dishes during the day, plus weekend evenings. Throughout, staff are warm and friendly and go out of their way to ensure guests relax. And no stay would be complete without a traditional afternoon tea; service starts at midday. What could be more self-indulgent than that?
