Hotel Review
This 18th century building survived the 1755 earthquake which destroyed so much of Lisbon and its feeling of history has been perfectly captured within the heavy limestone walls by acclaimed architect Manuel Aires Mateus, who restored the building, skilfully inserting 21st century luxury throughout. The six bedrooms are vast, and come with bathrooms inset with huge tubs cut from one slab of local, pink-hued, limestone and generous rain showers with windows out into the internal garden. Views from the bedroom are of the magnificent domed Pantheon, a landmark on Lisbon’s skyline.
Food is locally sourced and seriously good, whether it is the warm, home-made granola with natural yoghurt at breakfast or a tea of home-made scones and strawberry jam. On certain nights during the week, the communal dining table operates delivering a taste of Lisbon on the plate illuminated by lights from Italian designer Davide Groppi.
