Born in 1901 as "un grand hotel" in the classic French style, the Metropole has taken to the 21st century with enthusiasm and great success. Every class of room is on offer. Even at the lower end rooms are an immaculate confection of mahogany, teak, white linens, great beds and generous bathrooms. The public areas are a stylish theatre – away from Hanoi’s mad rush; a quiet garden restaurant and bar in the bamboo colonial style, a pool, shops selling irresistible pastries and deli foods, smart restaurants for smart dining, and on the outside a French street café, with staff who are genuinely keen to make the weary survivor of Vietnam’s travel scene welcome and comfortable. No synthetic niceness here. There are a small number of hotels around the world that are worth a detour just to visit. The Metropole is one of them.

"It captures old-world colonial charm."

"Far from resting on its laurels, it has managed both to move with the times and retain its grandeur, combining modernity with old-school glamour, in the heart of Hanoi’s former French Quarter."
