A striking, recently restored, nineteenth-century family home, Thambu Illam offers travellers a warm welcome in the heart of Jaffna. Four comfortable bedrooms, each with a small but functional bathroom, are centred upon a charming courtyard. Perch in the sitting room with a steaming cup of traditional sweet milk tea or take a cooling plunge after a day of exploring. Watch as bright-feathered kingfishers swoop to the pool’s edge and dragonflies dart above it. Enjoy lovely local breakfasts and the excellent recommendations of the friendly hotel staff. Jaffna is a fascinating place to discover, whether you’re eager to peruse the beautiful white-painted Public Library, to amble around the old Fort or to tear into spicy masala dosa. You’ll be delighted to return to Thambu Illam each evening, to peer up at the moon from the tranquillity of the courtyard.
